Extraordinary technical and intellectual advances have occurred in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) since its introduction nearly 40 years ago by Nobel Prize winners Paul Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield. Magnetic fields are stronger, more stable and more homogeneous; self-shielded gradients provide outstanding strengths and ever briefer switching times; pulse-sequence controllers are exquisite in their timing and vast in memory; and RF coils dazzle in complexity and performance. The past decade has witnessed a sea of changes in these fields, one that we celebrate in a Special Perspectives issue of the Journal of Magnetic Resonance.

In this Special Issue, foremost leaders discuss the state of the art in MRI and in MR spectroscopic imaging, and offer future looking vistas of these fields as applied both to materials and to living (in vivo) systems. We hope you will find these articles stimulating.
